This kitchen remodel in this historic home strikes a perfect balance between preserving the age and character of the house while incorporating modern elements and functionality. By seamlessly blending the old and the new, the outcome is a stunning and functional kitchen that pays homage to the home's history while meeting the needs of contemporary living.
To start, the kitchen layout remains true to the original design, respecting the architectural integrity of the space. The remodel maintains the overall flow and structure of the kitchen, making strategic updates to improve functionality and efficiency. The placement of appliances and work areas is carefully considered to optimize usability while maintaining a sense of tradition.
In terms of materials, the remodel incorporates elements that evoke the home's historical charm. The black and white tile floor is reminiscent of that old home charm, while the green backsplash adds a pop of modern color. This combination creates a cohesive aesthetic between old and new.
A durable, heat-resistant stone countertop adds functionality and a contemporary feel. The backsplash showcases a timeless subway tile pattern, but with a twist, using a unique green color palette to add a modern touch.
Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood and highlighting the kitchen's features. In this remodel, modern lighting fixtures are strategically placed to illuminate the space effectively. Ambient, task, and accent lighting are integrated to create a layered and welcoming atmosphere.
Historic-inspired pendant light with a contemporary twist was installed above the kitchen sink, adding visual interest and focal points.
The bar area created by the floating shelves becomes a delightful focal point for social gatherings and casual entertaining. It showcases a carefully curated collection of glassware, spirits, bar accessories, and plants, adding a touch of elegance and refinement to the kitchen.
The open display allows the homeowner to showcase their personal style and creates an inviting atmosphere for guests.
The irregular shapes and handmade nature of these green zellige tiles create a captivating texture that is both tactile and visually appealing. Each tile exhibits slight variations in color and surface imperfections, contributing to its character and authenticity.
Taking the backsplash up to the ceiling is a clever design technique that can visually enhance the height of a kitchen, creating a sense of spaciousness and grandeur. By extending the backsplash all the way up, the eye is drawn upward, giving the illusion of higher ceilings and overall taller space.
By removing the peninsula we were able to open the passage into the kitchen while not sacrificing countertop or storage space. We then framed the archway to match the historic woodworking in the house.
Matte black hardware was chosen to connect with the black color from the floor and touches of black from the veining of the stone countertop.
Overall, the kitchen remodel in this historic home successfully combines the charm of yesteryears with the conveniences of a modern kitchen. The result is a space that marries historical integrity and contemporary design, providing a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment for cooking, dining, and entertaining.
We refinished the original hardwood floors to seamlessly blend with the new historical-inspired black and white kitchen floor tile.
