The Playful House

The Playful House

This project was all about celebrating color and personality with thoughtful design! We remodeled the bathroom, kitchen, and living room to be filled with color and texture. Each of these spaces carry their own moment of boldness. Everything flows together through intentional materials and a shared sense of warmth. We’ve also added some before and after photos, so you can really see the transformation. Let us know in the comments which of the rooms is your favorite!

Gold vanity lighting with gold mirror in powder bathroom

This powder bath leans unapologetically into bold pattern and saturated color, creating a jewel-box moment within the home. A richly layered, botanical-inspired wallpaper wraps the space in movement, grounding the room with deep greens, mustards, and slate blues. We saved a little money by sourcing a pre-made vanity in a moody forest green. It truly introduces depth and contrast.

animal print with unique color and textures in powder bathroom

In the bathroom, a vibrant patterned wallpaper becomes the star of the show! We loved this wallpaper for its whimsical playfulness and the unique animals hidden within the design, little surprises you only catch when you’re up close. It is unexpected fun moments like this that brings us so much joy!

Floral and animal print wallpaper for powder bathroom

We played with balancing patterns in this design. The wallpaper is a larger scale patter mixed with a small patter for the floor tile. This pattern play is absolute perfections. A clean, timeless countertop balances the pattern play that we see on the walls and floor. This space feels both wildly expressive and thoughtfully composed. It is a high-impact, small-footprint designed to make an unforgettable impression.

Interior designer bathroom renovation project

Before photo: What started as a bland, builder-grade bathroom with zero personality is now a space filled with color, charm, and so much character!

We used brushed gold hardware to bring warmth and sophistication while also beautifully complimenting the geometric statement mirror and modern faucet.

white linen closet intigrated into wall

Because the room is fully enveloped in bold, expressive wallpaper, we designed the linen storage closet to feel clean and modern, using crisp white tones and polished gold hardware. The streamlined profile adds balance to the space while offering a highly functional storage solution.

Nationally recognized interior designer

Before Photo: These open shelves offered no privacy or aesthetic appeal for the homeowner’s bathroom storage. Toilet paper, towels, and other toiletries were left fully exposed instead of being neatly tucked away.

blue grout with rounded white tile and gold hardware

The fun continues into shower! We introduced a rounded, scalloped scale-like white tile accented with bold blue grout. This creates a playful layer of texture and connects with the blue tones in the rest of the home. The unexpected grout color brings out the movement in the tile and adds a touch of whimsy, giving the shower its own moment of personality. It’s a perfect continuation of the energy you feel the moment you step into the bathroom.

Blue cabinets in small kitchen with light oak cabinets

The kitchen continues the story with rich blue lower cabinets, soft wood uppers, and a subtle green backsplash that adds a depth of color without overwhelming the space. Smart storage, warm brass lighting, and a clean layout make it both functional and inviting.

Light oak cabinets with blue lower cabinetry in kitchen design

In order to maximize the storage solutions in this room, we had to have an off centered cooktop. This allowed us to take full advantage of the bling corner to the the left of the stove. It was a sacrifice we had to make. One solution to making it feel more open we did a few floating shelves to have display space and those go-to grabs for the homeowner when cooking.

This backsplash has such a rich variety of colors and textures that it instantly feels unique and beautiful. In small kitchens like this, it can be challenging to introduce character without overwhelming the space, but these tiles strike the perfect balance. Their subtle movement and tonal variation add depth and personality while still keeping the overall look cohesive.

How to upgrade your kitchen design

Before Photo: This kitchen was outdated in style and lacked the functional flow needed for everyday living. The layout didn’t make full use of the space available, leaving areas underutilized and disjointed. What could have been a highly efficient and welcoming hub of the home instead felt cramped, tired, and in need of a thoughtful reimagination.

funky backspalsh tile our best kitchen design recommendations

We mixed metals in this space by pairing a stainless steel sink with a matte black faucet and gold pendant lighting and hardware. While mixing finishes can sometimes feel overwhelming, thoughtful curation makes all the difference. By working with a designer, you can ensure that each metal relates to the others in tone, proportion, and placement, which creates a layered, cohesive look!

pass through to kitchen from dining nook

The arched entryway into the kitchen instantly warms the space, creating a soft, inviting transition as you walk in. The rounded dining table, paired with plush velvet chairs, echoes that curvature and adds a cozy, intentional intimacy to the dining area. It was the perfect way to preserve the character of the home and honor those arches!

top dining nooks for your midcentury modern home

This home features blues and green throughout and for the dining space, we wanted to highlight the green. It’s a great way to give it personality to call it’s own. By layering both green and blue throughout the space in both the dining nook and kitchen, living room, and bathroom in varying textures and tones, we’ve created a subtle visual thread that ties back to the bathroom. It’s a quiet nod that keeps the home feeling connected, cohesive, and thoughtfully designed!

re-imaging interior design trends for single flow

Before Photo: This dining nook was dark, outdated, and visually unbalanced. The large window, which should have been the focal point of the room, was completely overshadowed by the heavy, dark furniture in the space. Instead of feeling open and inviting, the area felt weighed down and disconnected from its natural light and potential charm.

gold chandelier in dinning nook with light filled windows

A large picture window frames the backyard and floods the space with natural daylight, turning even casual meals into calm, sun-lit moments. The round marble-top table adds an elegant, organic sensibility, while its compact footprint keeps the zone feeling open and approachable. The minimal brass chandelier above elongates the vertical line of the space and provides a clean, modern focal point without overwhelming the room.

blue floor to ceiling fireplace with unique textures

This living room blends midcentury influences with a fresh color palette to create a space that feels both comfortable and confidently styled. The star of the room is the fireplace, clad in richly saturated blue tiles arranged in a combination of a stack and herringbone patterns. The tonal variation in the tile adds dimension and hand-crafted character, making the fireplace a focal point.

A plush sectional anchors the seating area, layered with tactile pillows and a throw blanket that bring in pops of deep green, navy, red and soft neutrals. Warm woods as seen in the coffee table add natural texture and quiet luxury.

The green and blue pillows on the sofa each introduce their own patterns, textures, and tones, yet they work together seamlessly to continue the color story woven throughout the home. Their mix creates a layered, collected look that feels both intentional and effortless!

Hosting in Style: An Open-Concept Home with Bold Features

There’s something special about a home that feels effortless, where each space flows naturally into the next, creating an atmosphere that invites you to linger, gather, and relax. This project is all about that feeling. With an open-concept layout, thoughtful color moments, and bold, custom features, this home was designed to support both everyday living and effortless entertaining. I hope you enjoy looking through this project!

Portland Oregon based Interior Designer with large fireplace

The first big, bold design element we added to this home was the floor-to-ceiling tiled wall surrounding the electric fireplace. It instantly became a showstopping moment! The subtle texture of the tile brings so much character and dimension to the room, creating a warm focal point that grounds the entire space and elevates the open-concept layout.

Large dining table with custom upholstery chairs for hosting and relaxing

The dining room blends simplicity with a statement. The live-edge wood table brings an organic element to the otherwise modern surroundings, and the bench seating makes the space feel relaxed and family-friendly.

Custom tile that goes from floor to ceiling and surrounds electric fireplace

This tile has such a soft, gentle feel that instantly creates a thoughtful design moment. The warmth within the material feels both organic and slightly funky, bringing a playful edge without overwhelming the space. I love how it softens the entire room, adding texture, warmth, and personality all at once.

Colorful fireplace with interesting tile

This fireplace is one of those elements that draws you in the moment you step into the home. The scale of the tile paired with the wall of windows make it truly an astounding moment. It’s perfectly subtle yet unforgettable.

Black cabinetry for extra storage in large living room

This cabinetry was added to give the homeowners discreet, easy-access storage right off the kitchen and dining area. The rich black finish brings a striking depth to the space, while the mix of hardware adds a subtle, playful energy to an otherwise highly functional piece.

Modern kitchen design with unique mosaic tiles on backsplash

Visible from every angle, the kitchen ties the whole main level together. Marble mosaic tile, open shelving, and modern cabinetry strike a perfect balance between beauty and function. While we didn’t replace the cabinet fronts in this space, we refreshed the backsplash and countertops to give the room a completely updated feel. It’s a great example of how a few strategic changes can transform a kitchen without requiring a full renovation! We also added a pop of blue with new counter stools to connect with the rest of the home.

Marbled Mosaic tile in Modern kitchen

We added this beautiful marble backsplash to elevate the modern kitchen design. The unique variations and textures in each tile bring vibrant personality and distinctive character to the room. Modern kitchens can sometimes feel a bit cold or minimal, but this backsplash introduces the warmth and depth needed to balance the clean lines. It’s a simple addition that makes the entire space feel more inviting and alive.

Modern Kitchen design Oven range and waterfall island

This is a workspace designed for cooking, but also is the hub of the home. With this kitchen you’re never closed off from the rest of the home, even while prepping dinner! A sleek waterfall edge adds a wonderful design detail.

Bright blue bar in large living area with open concept look

The heart of the home is the expansive living area, anchored by a generous sectional that encourages family movie nights, casual hangouts, and everything in between. Layers of soft neutrals set the stage, while rich textures bring warmth and character. Large windows capped with custom window coverings flood the space with natural light!

Bright blue bar with integrated wine fridge

We added this custom bar as a thoughtful addition to the space, designed to enhance both functionality and flow. By placing it right in the heart of the living room, we created even more opportunities for hosting. The bar features a built-in wine fridge, beautiful backsplash tile, and full custom cabinetry topped with a sleek countertop. It’s the kind of upgrade that not only elevates how you can entertain, but also becomes a true design moment.

Living room couch, coffee table, and unique rug

We selected this rug to mirror the backsplash tile from the kitchen. The subtle pattern play between the two elements creates a visual connection that ties the spaces together. It’s one of those quiet design choices that make everything feel intentional and cohesive, helping the living and kitchen areas “talk” to each other while still maintaining their own personality.

Wood panneled entry way with unique wallpaper wrapping wall

The entryway sets the tone instantly with custom wood slat detailing that brings dimension and softness to the vertical wall. A patterned blue accent wall adds personality without overwhelming the space.

This bathroom is another bold statement we added in this home. It is a perfect example of how pattern and color can transform a small space into something unforgettable. The blues mimic the colors in the custom bar in the living room, tying all the spaces together beautifully!

unique wallpaper design, colorful bathroom design

The leafy, tropical-inspired wallpaper brings in lively shades of green and blue, setting the tone for a vibrant and playful design. Paired with the textural, geometric wainscoting this is a show-stopper!

The small-scale blue floor tile runs uninterrupted into the shower, visually expanding the space while creating a sense of cohesion. A frameless glass door enhances the airy, open feel, allowing light to filter through and making the bathroom feel larger!

walk in shower, black matte hardware for shower. hand held wand.

One of the standout features in this bathroom is the curb-less walk-in shower. Designed with universal design principles in mind, the shower allows users to have zero barrier to entering, making it accessible for everyone! Finally, matte black fixtures round out the space, making it clean, bold, and unique.

geometric white tile large format tile in walk in shower

The unique geometric white tile is not only visually striking but also surprisingly functional. Because it comes in a large-format design, there are far fewer grout lines to disrupt the clean, seamless look of the walls. This makes it much easier to maintain, with less scrubbing and upkeep required over time.

black faucet design inspiration, unique touches to your bathroom

The black faucet complements the vanity cabinets, creating a cohesive and modern look. This rich, grounding black color is important in anchoring the space that is filled with so much personality!

rich and dark black and blue colors in bathroom interior design

The contrast between the black vanity and the blue wainscoting is fun, playful, and dynamic. Seeing the two side-by-side shows how much personality is truly in this space.

The petite blue hex tiles on the floor tie everything together, continuing the color story while grounding the room in a crisp, clean aesthetic. Creating a home with this much personality is no easy task, but every intentional design choice comes together beautifully to make a cohesive, bold home!

Walnut cabinetry in laundry room

We designed this laundry room to feel high in sophistication and full of timeless class. The dark wood cabinetry adds depth and richness, while the sleek black stacking washer and dryer tie the whole look together. The result is a laundry space that feels both functional and beautifully classic.

Mid-Century Modern Aesthetic

For this project, the homeowners needed a few bathrooms in their home updated. During our conversation, it was made clear the importance of preserving the mid-century modern identity they fell in love with when they purchased the home while introducing layout changes and modern updates in order for the bathrooms to meet the needs of today. I hope you enjoy the blend that was created in this home.

Mid century modern designers in Portland Oregon

Modernizing this bathroom while keeping Mid-Century character was important for this homeowner. We decided to keep the vaulted wood ceiling and refinish it to make it feel new again. By adding a modern floating walnut vanity with under cabinet lighting, we elevated the space for the modern needs of today’s homeowners.

wabi sabi primary bedroom and bathroom with cool light

One feature of this house that I knew we had to keep was the original floor to ceiling stone fireplaces. I used this as the inspiration for the floor to ceiling modern tiles on the back wall of the shower. The homeowners and I loved how this design language transcended the decades of time between both designs.

exposed beams and tile wall

We took out the old enclosed shower to expose the vaulted ceiling. It created a grand and airy vibe fro the bathroom. We then decided to wrap the shower in glass to allow natural light to pour in with a beautiful tree-top view.

shower with exposed wood open air shower

The half wall was kept for a few reasons. One was for a little separation from the toilet and the shower and the other, more important reason, was to have a place to put a toilet paper holder.

hanging black lighting over vanity

The previous bathroom layout did not have a door from the bedroom into the bathroom. Instead, you entered through a set of doors that led into the closet. We ended up taking the original closet doors and moving them three feet to the side to provide a more functional entrance. The decisions meant sacrificing five inches of cabinet space. Well worth it.

In order to have the illusion of a larger vanity, we decided to place a walnut framed oversized single mirror above the sinks. This large mirror helps reflect the natural lite around the room. Above the mirror we places three milk glass orb pendants for design style and task lighting.

modern frameless glass shower surround with matte black plumbing fixtures

When walking into this bathroom through the new doors, you are greeted with wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling stone tiles. This is the wow moment. By taking the tiles across the entire wall and up to the ceiling, this bathroom feels wider and taller. This was an important accomplishment since we could not change the size of the room.

mix of boho and modern rug with black tile flooring

We used angled charcoal tile set in a 50% offset patter to achieve this unique patter on the floor. The subtle details set this design apart from the rest. By layering in a traditional oriental rug, we were able to play with that mid-century homeyness of the time.

restored ceiling with exposed beams

When we removed the old shower enclosure, the vaulted ceiling we exposed needed a good sanding and a fresh finish to bring it back to it’s original glory.

We took out the old linoleum floors and replaced them with a terrazzo tile to stay true to that mid-century aesthetic. To crown the space, we decided to put an architectural light fixture in the corner. I love the touch of uniqueness and out-of-the-box style.
